Based on the law of gravity, it would make sense that a leak coming through the ceiling should be coming from a spot on the roof directly above. That would be true if you didn't have horizontal roof boards. You see, there is a very small gap between each board where it was nailed onto the roof. If a leak starts at one end of your roof, the water can travel along the gap and drip down through your ceiling several feet away from the original point.
